STEPS TO SCREEN TIME SUCCESS
Get the most out of your summer with fun in the sun and fresh air. When it's time to come inside, use this helpful guide for yourself and the mini versions of you to reduce eyestrain on electronic devices when surfing the web, playing games or watching videos. We can't get rid of digital devices, but we can make a conscious effort to mitigate the negative effects they can have on our vision.
STEP 1: SCHEDULE AN EYE EXAM
Most children start out far-sighted, which means that their eyes have to work harder in order to look at screens up close. Your pediatrician does not check for these problems in their basic screening. Our eye doctors are trained to evaluate you child's prescription and will also test for eye muscle imbalances and eye focusing problems.
STEP 2: HELP AVOID INCREASING NEARSIGHTEDNESS
Increased time in front of a computer screen can increase your child's chances of becoming nearsighted. Not only will those children need glasses into adulthood, but with increase nearsightedness there also is an increase risk of sight threatening retinal problems and glaucoma. If your child is already nearsighted, you may want to consider treatments to help slow the progression. Please ask your eye doctor about myopia control at your next appointment.
SET UP YOUR WORK STATION:
Adjust your chair, desk and monitor for the optimal distances
Make sure your child's' feet can reach the floor.

ADJUST YOUR MONITOR:
Font size 12 point or larger
Lighting should come from behind or overhead, not directly at the face
Utilize a glare guard to reduce reflections
Adjust screen brightness and color
Position monitor arms length away. (18 - 24 inches) Lower monitor or raise chair so eyes are looking slightly downward. (10 - 15 degrees) Tilt monitor upward. (Bottom of monitor toward and top away from you)
For computer glasses to be most effective, they need to be able to filter the 455nm peak wavelength of blue light emitted by digital devices. Our lenses filter blue light by 35% across the entire blue light spectrum (400nm-495nm). More specifically, they filter blue light by 35% at the 455nm wavelength.
STEP 3: BLOCK THE BLUE
Blue light isn't all bad, as it's naturally present in sunlight. Its presence tells your body that it is time to be alert and awake by releasing the hormone serotonin. However, studies show that if there is increased blue light exposure at night, it can disturb your sleep patterns. Excessive and prolonged blue light exposure can also play a factor in eye fatigue, strain, and headaches.

STEP 4: AVOID CHRONIC DRY EYE AND IRRITATION
When reading or using digital devices, we tend to blink less often and are more likely not to fully close our lids. Blinking helps spread new tears over the cornea and flush old tears through the nasal-lacrimal duct system. Chronic use of digital devices can cause the oil glands in your lids to atrophy over time leading to poor quality tear production. By performing blinking exercises, you can help your glands stay healthy and your eyes feel better at the end of the day.
Blink on purpose - When you blink, the glands in your eyelids release beneficial oils which coat the front of the eye. Blinking at regular intervals maintains the health of the eye and promotes clearer vision.
